Artist Discovery: Eri Nobuchika (信近エリ)

Eri Nobuchika (信近エリ) – Voice

Nobuchika Eri is a Japanese pop singer and song writer. Her actual first name is Eriko and I’m guessing Eri is a nickname of hers. She was born in Fukuoka, Japan on August 3, 1985. Since Eri was a child, she dreamed of becoming a singer and she finally got a chance when she was 17. She sent her demotape to Sony Music SD “Gonna be a star” audition, unfortunately she forgot to put her return address. The president of the audition wanted to contact her, after a few calls to Fukuoka post offices he eventually found Eri. She actually had 7 more label offers, but choose Sony and teamed up with Osawa Shinichi aka MONDO GROSSO.

Two years later, the spring of 2004, she finished high school and began working on her debut single, “Lights”, with Osawa Shinichi (he produced all her songs on her debut album).  The single was released on December 8, 2004 and peaked at #78 on the Oricon charts. The song was used in the movie Shinku (深紅; The Deep Road) and as the ending theme for the anime FLAG. Words cannot describe how much I love “Lights”.

Eri released her debut album, nobuchikaeri, after releasing 3 more singles. Her debut album was released on December 21, 2005 and peaked at #65 on the Oricon charts. In 2006, Shinichi moved to avex trax and Eri went on a hiatus, however she did collaborate with NAOTA, the leader of Orange Range, on his solo project. NAOTA went under the name delofamilia. Eri returned in 2009 with her mini-album hands, and she signed with an indies record label, Hills Records.

Now, I haven’t listened to Eri’s mini-album, but I have listened to her debut album, nobuchikaeri. Let me say that its one of the best debut albums out there. Osawa  produced great music for Eri, her music is unique since it fuses a variety of genres together. Her voice is brilliant and powerful, check out the acoustic version of “Lights”. For any Japanese pop fans, I highly recommend listening to her music, start off with her first album!
